Top of Denmark, where the oceans meet.....

Skagen...............

The first thing you notice when you approach Skagen is the beautiful strong light. Then you notice the scenery, which is so grand, vast and untouched by human hands with its woods, dunes and heaths surrounded by the sea. On the one hand, the calm Kattegat, which is safe for children, and on the other, the rougher North Sea. Here the people live off the sea and in harmony with nature in a clean and healthy environment. Throughout the generations people from near and far have visited thispopular place at the northernmost tip of Denmark which has more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country. Here people congregate all year round, because it is a very, special place.

Sights which rise above the landscape...

The "Grenen", the headland of Skagen, has an almost magical attraction and is visited by more than one million people every year. The sand dune "Råbjerg Mile" is the largest migrating dune in Denmark and the church buried in the sand, "Den Tilsandede Kirke", the tower of which rises from the sand, are, together with the "Grenen", the most famous natural sights. The lights of the grey lighthouse, Det Grå Fyr", the white lighthouse, "Det Hvide Fyr" and the bascule light, "Vippefyret" are also part of the Skagen story Every year at the "Grenen" more than 100,000 ships can be seen rounding the coast.

A beautiful sight irrespective of the weather. The distances in this area are not long, and it is possible to enjoy all the magnificent sights by bicycle.

The Kingdom...........

Denmark is the oldest kingdom in the world. The current monarch is queen Margrethe II, who had her Silver Jubilee on January 14, 1997. She boasts the oldest lineage in Europe, dating from early 900 AD and Viking King Gorm. The Queen is very popular among Danes and visitors alike, and during major royal festivals thousands of people gather in the square in front of Amalienborg Castle to wave flags and cheer for the Queen and her family.

More than 200 castles and stately homes grace the Danish countryside -- a surprising number, given Denmark's small size. Many of these are open to the public. One of the most famous castles is Kronborg Castle, in Elsinore north of Copenhagen, where Shakespeare's Hamlet is said to have live.

The Vikings...........

A vacation in Denmark can be both educational and fun. No matter where you travel, a short detour will put you on the trail of the Vikings.

Denmark's countryside abounds with evidence of the Viking Age: their ships, their settlements, and their treasures. And they live on in authentic Viking festivals around the country, usually during summer.

The country is also home to a large number of strikingly preserved archaeological sites and authentic reconstructions of Viking ships. Viking museums vividly chronicle the Viking life and times during the glory days from around 750-1050 AD.

The fairytale

One of Denmark's most famous writers is Hans Christian Andersen, author of many a well-known fairy tale -- among them The Little Mermaid, inspiration for the world-famous statue in Copenhagen. His stories still touch children and adults alike and are read all over the world.

Just living is not enough... One must have sunshine, freedom,

and a little flower.
